The ESWC2012 PhD Symposium will take place as part of the 9th Extended Semantic Web Conference (ESWC 2012) in Heraklion, Greece. This event aims at providing PhD students with an opportunity for receiving feedback on their work from experienced researchers of the Semantic Web community and for creating relationships with other PhD students from other institutions. The Symposium is focused on students doing their PhD in the Semantic Web area or related topics, in particular, this includes the topics of ESWC2012.

The Symposium is open to all PhD Students that are categorized as follows: Early-stage, students at the beginning of their work that have defined their problem statement and a clear research plan; Intermediate-stage, students in the middle of their PhD course, having defined their problem statement, a research plan, and have collected some results; Advanced-stage, students who are in the last period of their PhD course but with sufficient time prior to completing their dissertation to benefit from the consortium experience.

Submitted papers will be reviewed by a number of experienced researchers with the aim of providing students with a constructive critique. Authors of accepted papers will be required to prepare a poster, and a brief oral presentation. A dedicated jury will select the best papers that will be awarded during the last conference session. Accepted papers will be included in the proceedings of ESWC 2012, published by Springer in the LNCS series.

Submissions at the Symposium have focus on the use or the development of Semantic Web theories, methods, and technologies in the scope of ESWC 2012 topics, including:

  • Ontologies, semantics, and reasoning
  • Semantic Data Management
  • Social Semantic Web and Web Science
  • Processes, Services, Cloud Computing and the Semantic Web
  • Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning for the Semantic Web
  • Semantic Sensor and Mobile Web
  • Application of the Semantic Web

According to the categorization of PhD students we are looking for three types of submissions. Submissions should be structured by following the templates suggested below, which will be also used as evaluation dimensions:

Early-stage submission

Motivation and Research questions: Describe the core research problem, and motivate its relevance for the Semantic Web area;
State of the art: Describe relevant related work, and point out weaknesses and open problems;
Proposed Approach: Present the planned approach and discuss its novelty, effectiveness, and possible limitations;
Planned research methodology: Sketch the methodology that is being (or will be) adopted, including the evaluation method;

Intermediate-stage submission

Motivation and Research questions: Describe the core research problem, and motivate its relevance for the Semantic Web area;
State of the art: Describe relevant related work, and point out weaknesses and open problems;
Proposed Approach: Present the planned approach and discuss its novelty, effectiveness, and possible limitations;
Research methodology: Sketch the methodology that is being (or will be) adopted, including the evaluation method;
Results: Describe the current status of the work with respect to achieved results (algorithms, methods, models, prototypes, etc.) and possible preliminary evaluation;

Advanced-stage submission

Research questions: describe the core problem of the PhD and motivate its relevance for the Semantic Web area;
State of the art: describe relevant related work and point out areas that need to be improved;
Proposed Approach: present the approach taken and motivate how this is novel with respect to existing work;
Methodology: sketch the methodology that is (or will be) adopted and, in particular, the approach to be taken for evaluating the results of the work;
Results: Describe the current status of the work with respect to achieved results (algorithms, methods, models, prototypes, etc.) and evaluation;

Submissions must be no longer than 5 pages and must be formatted in the style of the Springer Publications format for Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS). Papers must be in PDF (Adobe's Portable Document Format) format and must be submitted electronically through the conference submission site. Papers will not be accepted in any other format.
